Not all HVAC Services and Air Duct Cleaning is Created Equally
When mold growth occurs in your ductwork, it is also inside your HVAC unit and it creates a sticky paste or what scientists call a Biofilm.
Why is this important? Traditional duct cleaning with vacuums, whips, and brushes doesn’t remove this Biofilm. And in many cases, traditional duct cleaning and the application of chemicals just disturb it and make it worse.
Another issue today with many of the duct cleaning and HVAC companies, they are telling clients that spraying or fogging a chemical into the ductwork system will kill the mold and solve the problem. They are also telling clients that mold growth is very common now and that everyone has it.
The Real Truth - Mold Growth in your HVAC unit and ductwork may be common now but it isn’t Healthy! Also, Killing mold is Not enough! For those with health issues and sensitive to molds and chemicals, you need to remove the proteins, enzymes, and mycotoxins left behind after the mold has supposedly been killed. The proteins, enzymes, and mycotoxins that trigger health issues will still be distributed through the air via the ductwork system and HVAC unit.
Another truth - If the duct cleaning company you are considering doesn’t have a plan to decontaminate the HVAC unit at the same time they are cleaning the ductwork, then they are only addressing half the problem. In other words, if mold has been found in your ductwork, it is automatically in your HVAC unit as well. Mold spreads like an infection, and it’s impossible to have mold in your ductwork and Not in your HVAC unit as well!
One last thing - If the duct cleaning company you are considering doesn’t have a plan to address the main trunk line of ductwork located in the attic, they are leaving the largest concentration of mold activity in your home unaddressed. In the state of Alabama, the main trunk of ductwork is typically made of fiberglass duct board. The fiberglass fibers attract and collect the moisture in the air, trap, dust, debris, dander, and mold spores, which creates the ideal breeding grounds or petri dish effect in the main “lungs of your house”.
If you have discoloration or debris collecting around your air vents/registers, you need more than a duct cleaning company. If you are health conscious, you need a company that has the expertise, tools, and experience to Decontaminate your HVAC System and related Ductwork!
